Jinx Toy flip

Here I tried to make flip the expressions of Jinx (is that well saying?) I also tried to draw not so clean and I didn't draw the details.

Jinx Construction

UPDATE:

Here I tried to make another expression on Jinx design. This is my first attempt, I forgot not to draw so clean and I have to see if I can make the two expressions work to flip.
Is it good?
I will make other attempts, this time will try to remember not to draw so clean.

******************************************************************
obiously has some mistakes, but I think is a good try.
I had a hard time with the right eye. The lines that forms the eyes have more marked curves in some places that makes the eye look the way they look in that angle, that's really difficult to achieve, I've noticed at the Porky Lamp construction in the past post and I have to look those marked curves in this study for this type of head and angle.
I discovered something in the right eyebrow. We see the part of the eyebrow that's far apart because we are seeing the inside of the skull.
I hope you understand something
I have to keep studying.

Psst! I put the analysis of Porky.. CHECK IT OUT!

Porky Lamp Construction.

ANALYSIS:
- Big head
- eyes separated.
- little snout
- little ear and separated
- little mouth
- cheeks well definided
- no neck

*The jaw is a different form to the skull. The jaw is not attached to the crane by a line, is an independent form that is embedded in the skull and form.

*The back of the skull is longer than the front.

* The skull is not a 100% round is rather oval.

*there are large spaces in the face:
1 .- A large space between the face and the back of the head.
2 .- A large space between the eyes.
3 .- A large space between the face and top of head.

*There's a space under the nose that separates this from the mouth.

* We only see one ear, the left, this is far from the face.

*The left side of the face has much more room than the right side, we see a bit of the right eye and a small part of the cheek.

* The forms that make the face follow the shape of the head. The eyes follow the rounded shape and are positioned at different angles.

* The eyes do not go at the top of the face, they are tucked inside the skull. The left eye has a shadow on the top that indicates this.

* The expression is a smile. THE mouth pushes the cheeks updenoting the mass of flesh that are the cheeks, these are well defined and tied to the shape of the head.

* There is a space between the cheeks and lower jaw that is wider in the left side than the right.

* The lip is thicker on the side that is closer to us. The other side is becoming finer by the perspective and shape of the head.

* The body is pear-shaped, is smaller at the top and widens at the bottom.

*Arms barely see, are on the back of Porky.

*According to the model sheet of Porky, thighs protrude into the body. They are great in the beginning and begin to lose weight to the knee.

* Hardly any leg is too short

*The feet are large and cover a large area but only walk on tiptoe, however the area on which the claims appear to be sufficient.

*It has a great tie which gives the feeling of being bloated. It falls to the side following the shape of the body.

* The shirt is short

This exercise caused many clicks! in my head.
(Cross-posted from my blog.)

I love this page of Eisenberg's. This is actually the last panel of the page (you will see more as I study them) but I loved it so well that I had to draw it first.

Thoughts:

The detail is handled masterfully and reigned in by sensible hierarchy. The shingles and wood grain on the well are controlled by keeping them wrapping the form, but are full of life because they're asymmetrical, organic. They are not in equal rows; notice the extra shingle on the bottom left! I wonder if he drew the shingle to the right of it too small and needed to fill a space. Either way, it's great and works just fine. The wood is also organic, and has some lovely little details, but it's never distracting.

Things made of brick and stone are usually intimidating, but Eisenberg handles it like a pro-- not every stone needs to be drawn. They're the smooth, well-worn, old, and organic types of rocks people used to build things instead of ugly fake bricks. It looks worn and fun to touch. They hug the outside, and of course wrap around the form.

The bucket is a nice touch, and works as part of the well's overall form. It really contrasts nicely with the delicate tree that frames the left side and adds interest. The tree's in silhouette, too, so white it's very delicate, it's nowhere even resembling distracting.

Fagan himself is a beautiful pose! I was attracted to it immediately. I love how he sits in the middle of that perfect circle of a motion line. It's a pose you're not terribly prone to seeing in newer cartoons. It's so round and exaggerated. No one ever kicks back that far. You can tell exactly what has just occurred.

Even Eisenberg's speech bubbles are great. I love how they're cloudy, just for the sake of fluorish. It's also nice since it's in the sky, it almost doubles as a cloud at first blush. The composition has a lot of yummy places for your eye to travel to.
I wound up rounding out some of Foxy. His hand is the most noticeable. His upper body also seems evened out, puffed a bit, even. I dug the details in too far, mostly because I had to erase them a few times when I was struggling with the face. At first I missed the angle of his brow. I rounded out some of the contrasts, and ate up some of the space. Hopefully I can focus more on that in the closer compositions of the page in the future.

I just noticed, too, that the right side of the well tapers off in the wrong way. It should have more mass leaning to the upper right. And I cut into his cheek a bit with some fur detail. I should'a known better.

ALSO: I discovered a 5B pencil. I'm used to working with harder ones. Anyway, it's fun and you don't need to press as hard (something I need to force myself out of doing). I'm gonna look into getting even softer pencils, soon, if I can scrape together the cash.

Eisenberg Layout Study.

I'm not good at backgrounds and layout, so I decided to do some studies of this.

Emotional Statement:
- The cat is looking something that he likes from the window.

Observations:
- The six main elements on the picture are:
1.- Ground.
2.- Store
3.- Tree
4.- Fence.
5.- Cat
6.- Bird
- The cat is not in the middle, is more to the rigth and down.
- Big contrast between the cat and the store.
- The store is the biggest element in the picture.
- seems that the tree breaks the monotony of most straight objects, it also have the same inclination as the cat.
- the foliage of the tree points to the cat and this in turn points to look at the bird.
- there's big neg space between the tree and the cat and not much details in the elements.

this is the 11 drawing.
Is very difficult to make all the details on a small paper, so just leave it simple just to see de composition. I guess that this was drawn on paper larger than letter size.

Hey Look! Kurtzman Composition Study

Observations:
- The guy isn't standing right, is slightly curved to the right.
- The Vanshing Point of the river it's separated from the character.
- The Horizon is not in the middle, is slightly more up.
- The mountains are not equal, they are simple, organic and asymetric, drawn with more "straight" lines that made good contrast with the river and the character.
- The logs follow the perspective of the river, the logs that are closer surround the character, they are grouped into blocks and each is placed at different angles giving a more natural look to the image avoiding monotony.
- the arm holding the rod is free of logs leaving room to read better shape.
-The log, where the character is standing, is not in a straight line, is diagonal avoiding the monotony.
- There's lot of negative space surrounding the character.
- The mountains also have different sizes avoiding monotony.
- Is constructed with Hierarchy.

Heartaches Pilot: Layout attempt.

LAST Update:

This is my last drawing after the corrections.

*****************************************
-Line of action slightly bent
- slightly asimetrical and organic head.
-Big Nose
- Big floppy ears.
- Big Hands.
- Eyes slightly on diferent angles and one on top of each other.
- The eyes have soft corners
- The head have more weight in the bottom.
- The Tail of Spaz is big and heavy, the weight is on the bottom.

- face too streched.
- Needs bigger eyes.
- The fingers holding the tail should be better drawn. We should feel that they are grabbing the tail and it has weight.
- Bigger pointy hand.
- The hand that's holding the tail should have a more slithly bent curve.
- The raising ear should be slightly smaller

Man this is hard!

*****************************************

I decided to do a more easy pose for study (I'm not prepared for Scribner I think, hehe)

Visual Statement:
- The dog is surprised to find Spaz with that particular smell.

Analysis:
Dog
- Clear Line of action
- Big head, little body.
- Big long ears
- Thin arms
- Big hands
- Big Nose.

The focus of this picture is the dog pointing Spaz butt.

Maybe I have to do a bigger pointing hand and put it bellow the arm that holds the tail.
What do you think John?

Update: Porky study

Level1:Level1_check1:

Book Revue - Big Bad Wolf study

This is one of my favorite scenes from this cartoon! The animation is incredible! Especially when he swings the axe around and the axe gets right in your face. Looks amazing! Really inspiring stuff!

I got this image from John's blog. I think this was a key pose in the cartoon, but I'm not sure. I still think it was pretty good to copy from.

So here we go! Verbal analysis:

*His snout area really sticks out
*Long torso
*Big wolf feet
*Big bushy tail
*Right arm longer than left arm
*Big foreshortened axe

I tried emphasizing those observations a bit more. Trying to make the pose more expressive than the original.

Study: Porky by Scribner

I really enjoy making this studies from Clampett cartoons. I don't know why, maybe because they are funny, cartoony, extremly appealing and very solid.

I crush his head a little and made his body a little long.

And I change his expression too! the right cheek has to be more squached

Basil Wolverton study

I've never did an study from this guy. It's pretty scary for the first time, it's so great.
First, the verbal analysis:
-BIG head
-BIG Teeth
-Little face
-Little body
-Long hair vertical, which breaks the monotony with the horizontal teeth.

Level1:Level1_check1:

this first step always came out pretty stiff. Im doing it with some fear.
-The head was too little, so the body.
- the upper part of the cranium, where the upper lip begins, it's smaller.

Level1_2:

Level1_check2:
-The back of the head it's more curvy in the neck. It forms an "S" that is attached to the neck.
- The upper lip goes up
- the neck has to be strongger
- the chest is bigger

Level2:

Level2_check2:

- The up hair is even more big. Im still a little timid with contrasts.
- more prominent teeth
- The chest is a little bigger. the right arm shows more.
- The inside hair form is bigger.

Level2_3:
Level2_check3:

- Upper teeth less prominent
- adjust the hair that falls and it's form.
- adjust the form of the cranium, more solid.

Level3:

Level3_check1:

- Nose is bigger and solid.
- Fix the eye line.
- more stronger smile, the whole expression fell because of this.
- Upper teeth bigger.

Level3_check2:

- Adjust hair that falls.

Later I did this version by memory trying to apply the things that I noticed.
