Dakin Dream Owl

I like Dakin Dream Pets, they all have different shapes, great appealing, nice colors, they are all fun to me. I take this picture from an angry sleepy Owl because it seems to be a simple character to draw with great things in it.

Obesrvations:
- He's big, it has like a thumb shape, big at the top getting more little at the bottom. It's a great shape.
- He has a little face, angry looking and a tiny pointy beak. He has a lot of space in the face, that's great for expressions I think.
- He has little flat feet, no legs, so I assumed he walks in short steps and moves his feet really fast.
- He's in pijamas. I like the hat, is small compared to the body and has a nice fall.
- He seems to have strong arms.

This is my stiff study, then I tried to do it more loose:

trying to get another view and giving him another attitude

I like this drawing, I give him another expression, like he's very tired and cannot sleep

I tried to focus just in the general forms, i'ts better this way, much more easy and simple.
I was pretty close in the first try!!
This way is much more easy to understand the things. I forgot the base, sorry!

Here's another attempt at Jinx expressions. I tried not to change their size or proportion and I made his cheeks get thinner vertically and wider horizontally when he squeezes.
How is it?

I know I have to reach my "plateau" with Jinx, but I need to perforate more paper so I can flip the drawings. This next week I will.

It seemed a good idea to take one of the posters that John put on his blog the other day and trying to build better characters, caricature a bit and give them more life.
These was my observations from this poster:
Porky:
- the cranium is really big compared to his little jaw.
- Body is little compared to his head.
- little ears
- little nose
- fleshy cheeks
- big eyes but not enough to distract the attention of the skull
- his tie is small
- he has a happy looking.

Daffy:
- big cranium
- big beak
- little eyes but no too little to make it unappealing.
- long and skinny neck
- little body
- skinny arm and little hand.
- he has a happy looking too.

Now, I wanted to give the characters a bit more of their personalities, I made the line of action of Daffy more strong and I changed a little his expression of bland happiness to an expression of "happiness crazy,"Porky instead has an expression of happiness a bit more tender and a line of action less strong than Daffy. I also made the right arm of Daffy more visible, giving more space to the sillhouette of Porky.


This is my attempt. The car sucks, I know, I didn't give it much attention.
I think I could make the cranium of Daffy a little more big and give it smaller eyes for stronger contrast.

Last Fagan study for now

The dog's face is framed by the door to the coop. Within that, the carefully-placed highlight also hugs the face. Fagan's framed by the coop's wall. Nice details like the tree and the sack also embellish but frame the interaction between these two.

The characters are making eye contact. The dog's line of action is straighter than Fagan's, and it's related to it, but they aren't parallel. They almost form a "D".

The boards on the left, back side of the coop are totally mismatched from the closer side. It breaks the shape down into something more organic (much like the shingles on the well from a few posts ago). I had to resist the temptation to line them up. I think it's funny this way-- this coop was built by hand. I should bear this in mind when I do my own backgrounds. Man-made stuff can be misaligned and asymmetrical (organic!) just like natural stuff. Especially if it's made of wood, and probably by somebody's grandpa.
(apologies for ugliness, it wasn't this dark in real life-- I just cranked the contrast because I used an extremely light blue col-erase and I imagine you don't enjoy squinting)

I accidentally made Fagain squeeze himself too much-- to the point where I skinnied up his abdomen!

The board that is atop the coop's door that stretches all the way across was messed up in my final lines. I made it way too small on the far side, so it sort of clips awkwardly.

I think the hardest part about studying Eisenberg is his treatment of eyes. They're so tiny that they're very easy to mess up-- even a few specks of poorly-considered graphite change the directionality.

This is my last Fagan study for now. I think I'll do some toys next!
