about if they should touch each other or not... I think it depends of the situation.
in my oppinion, the second one from the top looks good, but the third one could be separated.
I always think that if they touch just a little bit, they can be separated, but if one character is really overlapping each other, it is OK, at least if their silhouette looks good.

Also, on those layouts, is it ok for the characters to be touching? or should they ideally not be?
