1) don't make them too big
2) too lumpy or jagged (where they break up the silhouette)

3) contradicting the flow of the overall object
Details are dangerous and you must make them obey your larger levels and statements.
Here's a much more detailed Batman, but the details make sense. They are small and follow the forms - they don't go off in their own directions like the more "cartoony" Batman above that is trying to be stylish, but is really just a collection of mistakes.
