Ernie Expressions

Hi everybody,

Here goes some expressions of Ernie.
I did't get it right yet. I will keep practicing to understand the construction of his head and expressinos and before I jump to complex layouts with a lot of people.
I have a lot of illustrations to do for the next days, so I wont be able to post any study soon, but I am always trying to apply all the principles we study here in my personal work.

I loved the posts about Tex Avery in the JKstuff blog... and the ones about design too.

analisys of the shape:

-little cranium
-head and eyes stretched vertically
-cheeks streched horizontally
-triangular nose
-he has no chin
-big round ears

More Slab construction.

I've made a nuw study of Slab.

I will try to do a analisys in words of the original drawing.

-Big head (his body is one and a half the size of his head).
-His right hand is larger than the left one.
-I've made his chick juicy.
-His wist and feet are in perspective.
-I think I've made his legs too symmetric... in the original drawing they are more assymmetric.

Here I tried to fix the perspective os the head and ears.

I will start to practice Ernie now.... and after I will go to a scene with both.

abraço,

davi

Toys and more Boo Boos

John suggested that I should draw more toys to better understand construction and proportions. Just to warm up I drew two toys based off of photos . I want to later draw some toys that I own at various angles.

Kangaroo Toy
----------------

To better get the proportions correct I started off by figuring out how many heads tall the toy is. This one is about three and a half heads tall. The space between the eyes is roughly one eye width.

I then shifted my focus to angles, the ears are facing downwards a bit and are angled outwards so they aren't just standing straight up on the head. The feet are also slightly pointed in opposite direction from one another.

The line of the muzzle follows the form of the head, so do the cheeks and the pouch zipper.

Here are the main mistakes, I drew the body too small, ears too large also angled too low.

Sabertooth Tiger
-------------------

I first figured out how many heads long he is, about three. I then looked at how different parts of him were at angles. The ears flop forward and away from one another. His feet also angle awaty from each other and so do his fangs ever so slightly.

The spot-like patterns on his back follow his form, also they make up three rows of spots within ovals. You can see a bit of muscle on him, his flank juts out a bit. Also his front legs, you can see that there is a dimple where his leg ends and his body begins.

Here are the big mistakes, the feet are too small, head to large, back is too low and the teeth are too far apart.

Boo Boo 1
-----------

All of his features are located halfway down his head. His ears and muzzle are roughly the same size. His eyes are about the same length as his muzzle. His muzzle isn't flat you can tell by the angled center line and that his mouth is in perspective.

I think I drew his ears too big and didn't capture the way John drew his eyes at all.

Boo Boo 2
------------

His bow is a little bit longer than his muzzle. He is about two heads high. his eyes and ears are about the same size. His body is not as wide as his head but still quite wide. And each side of his head is about an eye width. Boo Boo's belly button is on the same construction line as his hips.

I think the big mistakes in this one is the eyes are all wrong and his smile I drew too small.

Tinkerbell

1st: Analysis in Words:

- Big cranium
- Little jaw
- Little and thin body
- We only see the hand on the left arm
- Hands are resting on the wall
- There's less space on the left side of the face
- Left eye is really close to the nose, right eye is too far apart.
-There is more space between the mouth and nose from the mouth and chin
- Right hand bigger than the left.

2nd First level of construction

3rd Second level and details

Check:Next I'm gonna fix the mistakes.

Boo Boos

Hey! Sorry I haven't been posting yet again! Here are some Boo Boos though! The key thing that I noticed while drawing them is how subtle the designs are, they are asymmetrical but you wouldn't really noticed that at first glance. He looks to be just made out of simple shapes but his ears aren't triangles his eyes aren't circles the shapes are a lot more complex then you would think.

BooBoo 1
This was the toughest one to draw and in the end I did not get it quite right. His eyes are so organic and asymmetrical it made it a real challenge to try to replicate. His tie shows that he has form, its resting on his chest you can tell that because right half is tilting a bit upwards.

Boo Boo 2
At first glance you don't really notice the subtle overlapping. His tie on the right side overlaps his face, while his face is overlapping the left side of the tie. His chin is also going over the tie just a small amount. You also might not notice at first but his back isn' just one curve, there is a really small curve right where his shoulders are located. His nose would seem to be just an oval, but there are two smoothed angles at the top and bottom.

Boo Boo 3
This is my favorite Boo Boo, aside from the fact that he is the cutest of all the Boo Boos he also has the most interesting details. His mouth I think is the most interesting aspect, his nose is slightly crooked so you can tell that it is jutting out from his face and is also on his muzzle. His mouth isn't flat either, the left side slightly overlaps the right and the right side is a bit higher like the right side if his nose. He also has that cute animal face where his mouth is ever so slightly open. His muzzle is designed so that the eyes rest directly on it and the corners replicate the shape of his cheeks.

His hair is a lot like how you would draw leaves on a tree, first you draw a circle and then draw the hair making sure that the points touch the circle. his feet aren't just resting on the same line, the right foot is out more just like how someone actually stands with more weight usually being on one side or another. His bow is asymmetrical with a bit of the underside being shown on the right.

Another poodle

I look at it now, and I see that I think the left side was rounded off a bit-- his foot and nose should be pushed out further, I think. The ears also look clumsy-- they are rounded off, and the poofs have some lazy detailing.

(As usual, earlier work can be found on my blog! )

Edit:

JOHN SAYS: put perspective in the feet

the one that's closest to us should be bigger than the one that's farther away

be careful of the silhouette while fixing my mistake

Because I didn't want to put my poor piece of paper through any more abuse, I attempted to put a new piece of paper over the error and redo it, old-style, but instead of taping it in, I photoshopped it in so you could see the old foot. While I was at it I tweaked the ears a little.

Superman Punch! Update

Slab angle was really dificult to translate. I need more practice.

Purple Cow

I elongated the head or something. Actually I think I elongated the whole thing.

The front leg is wrong and weird. The eye should be higher. The ear is in the wrong place, but when I drew it in person it wasn't, I guess that's just how it turns out once you photograph it.

I inked and colored the first cow picture on my blog. :)

Poodle

I've also been drawing the Curly Fleece Poodle lately! Just noticed that I forgot the stitches on his muzzle. Woops!
(Earlier versions can be found on my blog).

CORRECTION

Hi,
I corrected the perspective of the foot, both thumbs and his eye.
I want to make more studies but I still have a lot of boring illustration to finish, I will post more as soon as I have time.

poodle setup and bg

I kind of sat on this for a while because I got confused how I should draw the poms on the poodle. I didn't realize how bad that thumb looks until I scanned it. Also having trouble with making the light look like it's coming through the window. BG doesn't look dramatic enough.

Funny break

I've decided to give me a break with the mickey staging and make a pose construction from John's storyboard drawings.

More to come.

Construction Slab

Hi,
here goes more studies of Slab construction.
I am trying to maintaing the guts and the negative spaces while keep a solid construction.
I had a problem with the right foot of the second drawing... I wanted it to be in perspective, but I don't know if I changed it too much when I compare with the original.
anyway, this is always my biggest doubt... to find the weak parts of the storyboard and to make them strong..
I need to go back to work, but will do more studies soon.
