Setups 1 - planning for multiple scenes to use the same setup - long shots

when you read through a storyboard, you look for scenes that use the same angle and same camera distance

when you find them, you try to design a layout that can use the same "setup" for all the scenes



In other words, one master Background that all the action can take place in

That means you have to plan how much space you need around the characters in order to be able to draw all the most extreme poses

Like all these images can use 1 setup:

This is a "long shot" That means the camera is far away enough to show the whole bodies of the characters.


so you have to plan all the drawings to work on the same background, and the sixes of the characters have to make sense from pose to pose

if they are on the bed they are smaller

if they are on the floor in the foreground they are bigger

if there are consecutive poses within a scene, the poses have to "flip" between each other

This lesson is to draw all these poses, so they use the same background, and that the consecutive poses flip.

You also of course have to remember everything from previous lessons - like negative space, style, not toning down the poses etc.

What Do You Need?

I noticed that this site is slowing down. I haven't seen anything from Ann, Kali, Geneva, Mitch, Kelly, Becky and others lately.

Do you need new lessons?

One thing I gotta stress is that constant practice and applications of each lesson is what makes you good and functional.

Just doing a lesson once is not enough to make the concepts stick.

My goal is to get you out of sketchbook scribbling and into practical drawing with control.

If you're just stuck on a concept, ask a question.

very difficult pose to do

This was my third attempt and is still BAD
This is a very hard pose to do, look at the head! is a very difficult angle, too many subtleties, the left foot has a rare knee, very difficult to interpret.
In this drawing every line is there for a reason, there is no line that exists by itself or random. I was impressed that even the tail is solid.
The cheek that is close to us was the hardest part I think.

A Corny Bugs

It's a very hard pose to translate, very curvy, solid, full of life, appealing and funny.

First I layout his basic general structure and made some lines for his arms and legs just to make a path for the positions. It flows better this way, with the lines.


Then I made the forms, the second level of forms. I had a very hard time with the legs and hands, I really don't know how to block the form of his fingers.

And finally de details.

I made right his line of action!
His head fits almost very well, I hae to make his mouth more open and the nose more down.
His hands and arms are bigger, and they have to be more up.
His body should be slightly thicker, also his legs.
The ears are not in the right place.

Bulldogs and Bears

Sorry for my absence, I've been working on a gallery show and commissions.

Here is the bulldog exercise, I first copied the orginal Tom and Jerry bulldog then I exaggerated that one, making his chest, front paws and collar larger as well as fangs and muzzle and then I made his hind quaters smaller. I then exaggerated that sketch even further.







Here are some more Kaspars, at this point I'm just trying to get the character design down pat.

I realized this time that Kaspar's head is made up of three shapes, Sort of like three tires stacked, each one getting smaller. His muzzle isn't fully drawn here (in the first image), it is just suggested by one small line. The peach on his face moves with his eyebrows and changes during expressions. There are only some areas of fur texture folllowed by periods of rest. And the hair on his head follows his line of action. His toenails are in all different shapes and sizes and are at different angles. The outer parts of his ears are thicker towards the inside and thinner on the outside. His eyes are asymmetrical and so are his pupils.

I think that is everything that I noticed this time, more soon!

Also anyone who likes drawing toys, this is a ceramic squirrel, cat,dinosaur from my grandma's basement and it might be fun for someone to draw!

Falling Hare study

I realize that this is a very, very hard drawing!
the construction is very solid, you can feel the masses, plus is full of life and this is just one animation frame!! Man, this is pro stuff.

The most difficult part was Bugs head, is very tricky and in this drawing is at perspective. It was very hard to me trying to transfer the perspective of the head, so I tried to see and analyze the angles of the head, where it bends and why it bends there and no in other part. I realize that it bends just there because of the perspective, the muzzle has this subtle angles too and the lines that form this muzzle bends there because the form wrap around the perspective of the cranium.
I also realize that the right side of the cranium is more big and has more space than the left part, because the perspective too.

My line of action in the upper part is too far foward.
The head is bigger
The arm tha is in the legs has to be more down.
Im happy with the lower part, it fits well

Kaspar Studies with BG

Hi everybody,

I am back from Portugal and now I will start to do more cartoon studies.
I began drawing these poses below. I started with the ones that had the explanation about the construction, than I jumped for the ones that you had already drawn (so I could read the critiques that mr. John K gave) and at last I drew the ones that nobody had tried. It was preatty hard and I think that it still have a lot of the same problems that mr. John K pointed already... but I also think that I am improving little by little... I will keep practicing.
After I finished the constructions I applied them in the background as you can see in the next image.
I use the photoshop to apply the images and also to make some small corrections on the proportions so it would fit in the BG... I don't know if it is the right way... but it kind of worked.

I can tell that it is not perfect and the drawings could be funnier (SHAME again)... but I really think that the next ones are going to came better... I will try not to take very long until the next post.
