A Simpler Exercise

I'm starting to think these full layout exercises are too much too soon. Esp. when a lot of folks haven't yet mastered their "guts" and negative spaces and contrasts.

I notice that everyone who has drawn this pose has:

Shrunk the negative spaces-both the ones in the air and the ones within the body and head

Toned down the line of action and pose

took out the construction: even his broken jaw should have a feeling of overall form, but most of the copies I have seen look like they were just drawn with a wiggly line and no form between the wiggles.

It might be easier for me to critique individual poses like this before we move on to complex layouts and setups with multiple poses and problems to solve.

  1. John, if I may say, we have been doing individual poses up until now. Granted we may have not yet mastered the "guts" but we have been doing these types of exercises.

Maybe doing poses of 2 characters in relation to each other wou ld be better since most (classic) cartoon scenes involve only 2 characters at a time on screen.

The first Slab n' Ernie on the bed was a good exercise. I tried to conquer too many of the SBs at once and it caused be some anquish and each drawing suffered from the overload. I should have just stuck with one of the SBs and done that correctly, as you had instructed.

I'm going to continue with the layout study, since I am making progress with it. I'd like to see it to the end, good or bad. If that's ok?
