I was looking back in my older exercises in this blog and I found this critique from mr. John K in the last Popeye that I have done ( here ):
"Part of the point of the exercise of drawing toys is to capture, not only the construction and proportions... but to capture the feel of the material, in this case the soft rubber.
Your finished line is the same line that you use for your pure cartoon drawings and doesn't suggest how the rubber feels. It's too rough and harsh.
You are also missing a layer of planes.
For example, look at his sleeves. They arent just 2 dimensional ovals. There is a surface plane facing us, then it bens away from us where it wraps around his arm.
Same thing with the bottom of the shirt where it tucks into his pants. You are missing a plane."
so I decided to try to fix it before I move on.
I don't know if I got the idea of the material... the "soft rubber" feeling.
I will also start to study how to caricature the drawing from a toy as suggested... but I have a different toy in mind.
I will post the first attempts here soon.
abraço,
davi
