2 Slabs and a Bastard *EDIT*

*EDIT* I tried to fix the mistakes I had on the previous drawings. The fixed versions are underneath each one of the storyboard sketches. Let me know what you think! I'd like to hear some feedback!

Hey, I'm back! And it's been forever.

Here's some Slab practices so I can try to maintain the guts of the characters from the storyboard sketch. Right now I feel like I got a long way to go for me to start staging characters within backgrounds, so I figured I'd practice doing some more of these until I get good enough with actual layout making.

*FIXED*
*OLD*

The Slab on top came out pretty good I think. I made his head and cheek area a bit slender. I could've moved the head a bit to the right more and also add more tilt. I do like how the perspective on his feet came out though.

*FIXED*
*OLD*

I tried pushing his pose a bit further in the top one. I could've added more perspective in the head by making it smaller while his body is more closer and bigger towards us. I noticed I strectched out the arm that connects to the big fist too much. Gotta fix that.

*FIXED*
*OLD*

This Donald Bastard was fun to do. I like that I added more perspective on his feet to make his stance seem more balanced. I could've made his arm on the right a bit bigger for it to seem more solid and have his hat stretched out a bit on top, but I had to cramp it a bit for it to fit on the page. I'll fix it though.

I'd like to hear what you guys think!

Ernie Expressions

Hi everybody,

Here goes some expressions of Ernie.
I did't get it right yet. I will keep practicing to understand the construction of his head and expressinos and before I jump to complex layouts with a lot of people.
I have a lot of illustrations to do for the next days, so I wont be able to post any study soon, but I am always trying to apply all the principles we study here in my personal work.

I loved the posts about Tex Avery in the JKstuff blog... and the ones about design too.

analisys of the shape:

-little cranium
-head and eyes stretched vertically
-cheeks streched horizontally
-triangular nose
-he has no chin
-big round ears

More Slab construction.

I've made a nuw study of Slab.

I will try to do a analisys in words of the original drawing.

-Big head (his body is one and a half the size of his head).
-His right hand is larger than the left one.
-I've made his chick juicy.
-His wist and feet are in perspective.
-I think I've made his legs too symmetric... in the original drawing they are more assymmetric.

Here I tried to fix the perspective os the head and ears.

I will start to practice Ernie now.... and after I will go to a scene with both.

abraço,

davi

CORRECTION

Hi,
I corrected the perspective of the foot, both thumbs and his eye.
I want to make more studies but I still have a lot of boring illustration to finish, I will post more as soon as I have time.

Funny break

I've decided to give me a break with the mickey staging and make a pose construction from John's storyboard drawings.

More to come.

Feel free to make fun of my truancy.

Hiya, fellas! Sorry I've been such a delinquent.

(I had a scan of more details added in between here-- like some major elements of clothing, some more facial features-- but I think I lost the image).

Construction Exercise - individual character

Hi,
Here goes my attempt to learn construction and mantain the guts of the layout.
I scaned the drawing before cleaning with the black lines, for you to compare the structure.
problems and doubts that I had while drawing:
-mantain a solid structure of the jaw.
-find the right place of his butt, it isn't right yet.
-I didn't know if I should draw his shorts more 3D or more flat (I've made it with a "3D" structure)
-I tried to put meat in his cheeks (using the classic Preston Blair's "juicy cheeks") it worked better in the meft cheek.
-I've made his right arm more curved than the original drawing, that is more straight (doubt: in this case should I keep it straight?)
-It seems that I shrunk his head and some of the negative spaces.
I am still busy for te next week, but as soon as I finish some illustrations that I have to do I will go back to my studies... I will keep working on individual characters to improve my construction.

SLAB BROKEN JAW 2nd attempt

I think this is a more accurate version. I feel that I toned down his expression.
It's difficult not loosing the guts .

Roughs - Davi

my first tries of the exercise.
I can see some proportions that are not right... and I lost a lot of the negative space...
I will try to correct this.
Chris and Anne... your studies look good. It helped me a lot to look at yours first.

Ernie

John told me I had to work to get rid of the stiffness of the drawings, so I did some Ernies trying to make them less rigid.
Not sure if I succeeded

Pedro's Slab and Ernie Exercise

Hey, everyone! Happy New year! Hope your holidays were nice!

Here's my take on the Slab's First Fist layout exercise.

Hope these are okay. They aren't fully cleaned up though.

I wanted to see if I was going in the right direction before I kept going and wanted to hear everyone's thoughts.

I tried maintaining the guts on some of these from the storyboards. I think overall I did fine. There are some problems I noticed like some things are slightly toned down and I had some problems spacing the characters within the background like the ladder being to close to Ernie as well as too close to the edge of the paper.

I also tried maintaining a good flow between each pose so that they consecutively flip properly.

I remember reading a post that John did in his blog about how Irv Spence designed the eyes on some Tex Avery characters where their eyes don't follow the center line on the head without making them look flat. Here's the post I'm talking about.

I tried dong so with Slab and Ernie's eyes in most of these layouts so to attract the viewer to their expression in their eyes like the one Ernie has above, which I think was John's intention when he did the storyboard.

Doing this also helped the drawing retain the guts from the storyboard drawing.

With this last layout below I analyzed from the storyboard drawings that these last poses took up almost the whole spacing of the BG, so this is the layout I drew first while I visually planned out how the other poses from the other storyboard drawings would fit into that final spacing of the BG.

As I did the other layouts, little by little I started changing certain things in the BG like raising the top bed for Slab's big fist to fit in better or adjusting the steps on the ladder, so that all the poses read clearly alone as well as read clearly and make sense within the background.

I don't know if that was exactly the correct way to go about it, but it seemed to make sense to me.

Let me know what you think! If anything doesn't make sense let me know.

Slab

I've decided to start knowing the characters and how to draw them before making the layouts. These are some Slab's.

Now Im gonna try some ernies and donalds.

More Layouts

Hi everybody,

it is good to see your drawings.

I have made more studies.

I think I am getting more used to the model of the characters.. and also tried not to tone down too much the expressions and poses.

I will try to translate the emotional statement that I made for these drawings... actually I have a problem of vocabulary when I try to make the emotional statements in English... I can explain their expressions much better in Portuguese.

abraço,

davi

Layout Study - "Slab & Ernie"

Hello everybody,

here comes my studies of the last exercise.

it was harder than the one with Kaspar, specially because I haven't practiced a lot the model of these characters.

I just finished the drawings (I need to rest) so I can not see the mistakes yet.

I will take a look tomorrow and I will be able to post a self critique of the exercise.

I want to do more of this, it is very cool.

abraço
