Bugs Bunny & So Dear To My Heart Construction

Hey guys, sorry for my absence. I made sure to do lots of sketches tonight!

I mainly wanted to focus on construction, inking and animals. This is also my first time using a colored pencil and then inking on top. I loved it so much I'm going to get some Col-erase pencils this week! All of these are inked in brush pen.

These first two are from "So Dear to my Heart,"

The owl was quite difficult. I made his wrist too small as well as his hand. His head should lean back a bit more and his head should tilt more to the side. I also made his tall way too small. In the original, I enjoy the little bits of feathers that are on his neck and head. I noticed that they aren't completely covering him so there can still more smooth lines, also the feathers aren't stand alone, they are in clusters.

The sheep's head I made too large as I tend to and his legs are too short. I really love how there are so many subtle curves on the sheep's leg. They are really tough to draw, I either want to smooth out his leg or exaggerate the curves. There is a real understanding of anatomy in this image, and it's simplified in such a perfect way.

This is one of my favorite Bugs designs. I love his yellow gloves and far apart eyes. I love the line of action for his arms, how they flow together. There's something great about his ears completely back and his tail straight up in the air, it makes great contrast.

For my drawing if him, Bug's torso is a bit long and his right hand should be lowered. I made his bottom HUGE! His head should be narrower and tilted back more. The carrot should be tilted back as well.

This saucy Bugs pose is one of my favorites. The folds of the dress are perfect, you can easily make out the forms underneath. And I love the slight curves of his lady like gams.

For my drawing, his head is too wide and his muzzle juts out too much. His feet should also be closer together and the frilles of the dress are completely wrong.

I have 5 more drawings to post tomorrow. I didn't want to make a huge entry. They are some more Yogis and Asterix animals!

  1. Very nice, Becky. I love that Bugs version, too.

Did you ink in Illustrator? The line weight varies too much and not giving weight/solidity to the drawing. On Ballerina Bugs, the leg closest to us should have a thick line on the calf of the leg tapering down the the ankle and a thinner line on the shin.

I'm no expert at inking, but I try to keep in mind what a life drawing instructor taught me, to always be aware of where the body is carrying the weight, which side is stressed and which is relaxed.

In inking my drawings, the side that is stressed will get the thicker line weight. Bugs' calf, top of his foot, and ball of his foot are stressed (if you stand on your toes, where do you legs and feet feel stressed. Those are the areas that should get the heavier line.

    Well, that's how I try to (th)ink. =) Hope I made sense.
