Pencil linework

I'm using a few images here - not to compare the quality of the drawings - but the linework alone.
These top 2 drawings have the best pencil linework. The lines are organic and flowing, yet hold in solid forms - you can see and feel the construction.
This is too rough and vague below. Too many lines searching for the forms. Details (faces) too vague.
These below are too blunt, not sensitive. They distract from the drawing itself. I find myself staring at the heavy even lines instead of at Tom.This is a great drawing, but the lines are a bit scratchy.

These poses below are pretty good but the lines are distracting because they are so chunky- extra shapes and angles here and there, jutting out of the forms. Forms should be more clear and solid.

same with these: Too chunky,
even for roughs. Shuld flow more. Look at Tom's octagonal itchy shoulder in the above left drawing. Joints like shoulders, elbows and wrists are too angular and looking a bit arthritic. Smooth out![tnjtoms.jpg]

Perfect old Disney drawing:

  2. This is good helpful stuff John. Just when my brain what getting fuzzy and unfocused you remind me what I'm aiming for.

I think it's easy when you're copying to get a bit machine-like and feel like you're not in conscious control of the important qualities in the drawing. But you are, of course.

  4. Thanks, John! I'm working on not suffocating my studies like that. I'll try for drawings more like the top ones.
