Testing, 1, 2, 3...

Hello, all! Geneva, here. I'm posting this for a couple of reasons; the first is to test and make sure I have proper privileges (I've never been a contributor to a blog other than ones that were only mine). The second is to say that everyone should put up their studies of that neat Howie Post drawing John put up a couple of days ago.

Can we edit each other's posts? It'd be nice if everything could be in one big post for everyone to see...

Cross-posted to my studies blog also! Anyway, does anyone have any advice for getting details to obey larger forms? It makes sense theoretically, but I have trouble making my details not eat into my larger forms sometimes, when they're more complicated.

  1. Hello everybody,

Sorry about my english. I will always try my best to express my self clearly... but I think that sometimes it will sound confuse.

I will try to improve this as well.

It is still hard to believe that I am going to study with such talented people... thank you for this opportunity.

I was thinking in the problem of details that dont obey larger forms...

Geneva, are you trying to copie the lines exactly like they are in the original drawing?

I always lose the larger forms when I try to copy the details...

Usually, after I find the right places for the larger forms, I just look at the direction that the detail goes and create something similar (but not identical) and work the silhouette at the same time...

the line gets more expressive but the draw never looks exactly the same. I dont have the ability to do a perfect copy, if I try to draw with this responsability I dont enjoy the moment and the drawings dont look nice.

    I hope it helps.

  2. yea, i just tried to wing my smoke trail too, mine looks slightly mushed though. I'm totally with you Davi as far as trying to understand and draw the picture yourself instead of copying each line exactly. I copy the stuff exact on stuff that i have a really hard time understanding though.

One of the things I was trying to figure out in the drawing was whether or not the pony's face is actually slightly turned, or if that's just the design and it's at full profile. i dunno, did you guys see that?

as far as details, how do you decide where you want to put them. are you supposed to put them where you're trying to draw the eye to?, or away from? or just wherever?

  3. You know, that's actually a really good idea, Davi. In my earliest studies I did a little bit of that, but over time I guess I've become more obsessed with correctness than overall idea. I think perhaps when it comes to tiny details it might do me more good to pursue proper hierarchy than trying to make sure I get it all just right.

As for Nightmare, I assumed he was looking away just slightly. Some odd degree angle, but not enough to apparently move his lower neck too much.
