Magician and Kaspar

Hey again!

I finally got around to drawing some magicians. For the first one, he has a very clear shilloute which easily shows his action. His mustache is in perspective and follows the form of his face. His pupils jut almost out of his eyes.

For the second one the line of action is very strong, you can feel the force of it. Bugs is following the line of action and every one of his bones is probably breaking at this point. The mustache is used to frame the eyes. His hat is in perspective and indicates that his head is tilted back. There are lots of detailed areas next to large spaces, for example the cape is next to his jacket and the negative space. The bow on his cape is next to his dress shirt.

Small shapes are next to large shapes to give periods of rest. The tie and button are next to the large shapes of the jacket and the belt is also next to large shapes like the pants and jacket. His eyes are large enough to tell his emotions yet small enough to allow his eyebrow to emote as well. He is resting on the basket, his feet are further away which normally would look unbalanced but actually due to him supporting his weight it works.

And for the last one, each positive shapes fits into the negative shapes so well. And the guns are used to point at each character. Bug's head fits right underneath the man's arm and is by his stomach. The guns create an interesting composition with the two parallel lines that are pointing into opposite directions.

And now time for some more Kaspar drawings, this time I tried to make him more on model, be more balanced, and not to smooth out too many shapes.

  1. The magician constructions are very good and solid, a big step forward

they have good clear negative shapes. You are 90% there with those

they have all had the contrasts toned down, so you might wanna analyze by comparing them to the originals

Kaspar needs to be more solid. For some reason you are adding all kinds of big wobbly shapes to his form and completely changing the design which ain't the point

you wanna keep the guts of what's there and just correct obvious mistakes in the original, not change everything just for fun
