Dog Caricature

Last Update:

Cartoonish version

I think this is a more accurate version. NowI'll try to do a more cartoonish version without loosing the forms and contrasts.

I decied to do an analysis first:
Emotional Estatement

-The little dog is angry, it seems to be saying: What's that? Im not cute you idiot, just God made me this way.

Visual Estatements

- HUGE head
-BIG cranium v/s little muzzle and jaw
- little body
- little legs and paws
- The head is a little bent, you can see the top of the head.
- the left eye is more open than the right eye.
- little nose

This is my last version, I know is semi-realistic and stiff but I think I can do some things that John commented me, like work with a construction based more in the object than the Preston Blair method.

Trying to do a caricature of this dog using some principles.
Update:
awesome dog expresions!

  1. Hi Paul

    try drawing what you see

not how you think Preston Blair would do it

Make it look like the actual dog

  2. ok John
uf! This is difficult, I have so established this way of building characters that it's hard for me to escape it

    I'll give it another try

    thanks!

  3. you can still use construction, but construct what you see in front of you

don't just make something else up that has nothing to do with the model

  4. that is about a million times better!

Now you are using observation as well as construction.

    That's the winning combination!

Do that with your human caricatures too.

And then when you find funny features from your caricatures, you can apply them to cartoon characters.

The more shapes you learn, the more creative you can be.

  6. Thanks John!

I think I'm starting to get it.

If I do a simple version, cartoonish, What should I keep and what to discard? I'm a little afraid to simplify things a lot, back to the egg and pear

  9. ok John!

Thanks Davi. Looking now the two attempts I have to say that I'm more happy with the last one because is more faithful to the picture.

  10. it seems to me like the top of the dog's head is a lot bigger than his lower face

and what's funny about him is that he's cute but TRYING to look tough

    think you could capture that?

Your latest drawings make him look like he actually IS tough
